Ficus elastica, commonly called India rubber plant, India rubber tree or India rubber fig, is native from the Himalayas to Malaysia, Sumatra and Java. It is a broadleaf evergreen shrub or tree that may grow to 50-100’ tall in its native habitat ( 10'-15' indoors). It is widely grown in the tropics as an ornamental tree. Mature trees develop banyan-like aerial roots that form trunks. In colder climates, this is an extremely popular houseplant that typically grows to 2-10’ tall. It is noted for its thick, leathery, glossy, dark green leaves (to 12” long and 5” wide) and pink to purplish stipules. Milky sap from these trees was used to make an inferior rubber in the early 1900s. Small oblong axillary fruits (1/2” diameter) in pairs are rarely seen on plants outside of its tropical native habitat. Not pet friendly.

When your new plant arrives, we have a few recommendations: first, immediately open the box, remove the plant from the box, remove the protective sleeve, and water the well. Allow your new friend to acclimate to its new environment for a few weeks before you repot it.
With few exceptions, most people want to put their new plant in a beautiful new pot. Here are a few tips for the majority of plants ( unless otherwise noted).
* When your plant arrives, wait a few weeks to allow it to acclimate. This will mitigate the shock.
* When it is time to replant, use a good quality soil. One that is low in peat and high in perlite is suggested. I recommend Purple Cow Potting Soil.
*When removing from the grow pot, be sure to open the roots up so they can expand in there new pot.
* Be sure to not plant too deep. Leave 1/4" of the top of soil the plant is growing in above the new soil line. This will prevent soil accumulating around the stems and suffocation.
* Water deeply. Remember that this watering is not just for drinking , but to eliminate air pockets.
* Use a water soiable fertilizer every 2 weeks ( unless stated otherwise).
